Join our team at the Office of American Indian Health & Health Equity Performance and Research Section as a American Indian Health Equity Research Scientist and make a lasting impact!

As an American Indian Health Equity Research Scientist, you will serve as a recognized expert in public health research, providing invaluable statistical, evaluation, and analytical expertise. You will:
  • Lead Advanced Research & Analysis: Design and execute complex studies on American Indian health equity processes, programs, and grant initiatives.
  • Drive Policy & Planning: Develop models, frameworks, and methodologies that influence bureau, agency, and statewide health policy decisions.
  • Ensure Data Excellence: Perform data collection, reporting, and quality assurance to maintain the integrity of public health initiatives.
  • Support Leadership & Integration: Collaborate with leadership to provide technical assistance, ensuring the integration of equity research into actionable public health strategies
Primary responsibilities include:
  • Conduct evaluations of American Indian public health initiatives.
  • Generate reports and disseminate findings to improve decision-making and long-range planning.
  • Develop and implement equity-focused health frameworks and methodologies.
  • Provide technical expertise to advance the health outcomes of American Indian populations.
This position is eligible for telework to applicants who reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota or South Dakota. Position locations will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out of one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Mankato, Marshall, Bemidji, Fergus Falls. This position may have the option of teleworking based on the business needs and manager discretion. Commuting to the St. Paul office and other MDH office locations across the state may be required. Reimbursement for authorized business travel expenses is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

4 years of experience in public health data science, analytics, data equity, data modernization, governance, research and/or evaluation. As well as experience in the following areas:
  • Experience working with Tribal Nations and/or urban American Indian communities.
  • Experience in data collection, facilitation and database management.
  • Experience using software for data analysis with both primary and secondary data.
  • Experience collecting data and analyzing primary and secondary data.
Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:
  • Deep understanding of Tribal data sovereignty
  • Working knowledge of Indigenous evaluation methods and frameworks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public health and social determinants of health and/or the intersectionality in population health with the ability to develop research methods that measure health inequities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate findings clearly and concisely.
  • Evidence of preparing reports and sharing with diverse audiences.
A degree in public health, data science, chemistry, biology, informatics, or related field may count towards professional experience as follows:
  • Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience
  • Master's degree may substitute for 18 months of experience
  • Bachelor's degree may substitute for one year of experience
  • Associate degree may substitute for six months of experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative health equity research methods, including and not limited to, social epidemiology, predicative analysis, survey design.
  • Working knowledge of statutory rules for data collection, data management and policies and procedures related to data retention.
  • Experience using software such as ArcGIS, Tableau, Atlas TI, NVivo, SPSS, STATA.
  • Ability to apply a culturally competent perspective and approach to evaluation and research practice.
  • Knowledge of public health issues, Minnesota's public health system including Tribal public health
  • Existing relationships with Tribes and urban American Indian organizations across the state of Minnesota.
