Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, Conducting, Education or related field. Three (3) years of full-time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment, administration, and/or development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level (student experience may be considered). Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Music, Music Performance, Music Education, or Conducting, Education or related field. Additional years (4+) of full-time experience directing or assisting in the direction, recruitment, administration, and/or development of a marching band, pep band, drum corps, drum line, concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, and/or equivalent at the secondary and/or college level (student experience may be considered). Experience writing drill and/or arranging music for marching band. Experience working with a diverse student body. Experience with student leadership development. Responsibilities: The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the coordination of show conceptualization, design, instruction, and execution including but not limited to drill, visual arts, and the integration of guest performers for all Athletic Bands performances as well as for non-athletic special events. The Assistant Director will assist in the teaching of all basic, intermediate, and advanced skill development and instruction required for high-level marching and pep band performance. The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of preseason band camp and the sound execution of performances. The Assistant Director will help coordinate efforts and band performances which involve outreach to the local and regional community; this includes parade requests/performances, partnerships with local high school bands, participation in university and community service, charitable and philanthropic initiatives as well as the development and coordination of special events. The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of all marketing and recruitment strategies to maintain and grow the size and the quality of the bands, as well as to further position the program for regional and national success. The Assistant Director of Athletic Bands will help identify, maintain, monitor, and inventory all departmental equipment & property including instruments, uniforms, and field equipment. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting in the coordination of departmental major programming initiatives, including the organization of a Preseason Band Camp, special band performance events, banquets, and educational programs that foster the development of students in the areas of leadership, civic engagement, multicultural competency, character, integrity, and team building. Student Development and Supervision: The Assistant Director will assist in the coordination of the selection, training, development, and supervision of professional and contracted staff, as well as a strong team of student band office staff. The Assistant Director plays a leading role in the important function of advising various leadership and student groups within the band. The Assistant Director will help coordinate plans and performances which involve travel to postseason tournaments. The Assistant Director may be responsible for a range of administrative duties including but not limited to supervisory administrative duties, financial administrative duties, performance and travel related administrative duties, facilities duties, recruitment and marketing administrative duties, and other administrative duties as assigned. Professional Development and Committee Involvement: Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development. Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life. Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Hours outside the typical work schedule may be required at times. Special Notes: This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
