Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital, Human Resources Department, is accepting applications for at least one (1) Permanent, Full-Time Automotive Pool Manager II (APMII). This position is under the direction of the Staff Services Manager I.

The APMII is responsible for ensuring the efficient operation of the Motor Pool Department, which includes a variety of daily essential patient and hospital related services, the hospital's pool of State-owned vehicles, and on-site garage:

  • Directly supervises the APMI, who is responsible for the direct supervision of 1 Automotive Equipment Operator II (AEOII) and 14 AEOI's by ensuring the efficient scheduling and timely completion of essential daily patient care services such as the pick-up/delivery of food, laundry, medical and personal care items, packages, furniture, etc., and bus transportation; various business services such as delivery/pick-up of State property, office moves, hospital set-ups/take-downs for special events and other business needs as required; coordinating and scheduling the hospital’s State-owned vehicles utilized for off-site business; and providing strong administrative support to the SSMI pertaining to the daily operation of the hospital’s on-site garage for the purpose of maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles and other related duties in the operation of the Motor Pool Department.
  • Directly supervises 1 Automobile Mechanic in the daily operation of the hospital’s on-site garage, which includes a car washing station, vehicle lifts, tire balancer, and other related equipment; develops, implements, and maintains service schedules for all hospital’s State-owned vehicles and equipment to maximize the lifespan and sustain efficient operation; manages the safety inspection and operation of the patient transportation buses and trash trucks and the accurate records of each Driver’s Employer Pull Notice (EPN) in compliance with the Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program conducted by the California Highway Patrol; conducts an annual inventory of all automotive maintenance supplies ensuring the adequate inventory without excessive overage; processes purchase orders and services contracts in accordance with the hospital’s Acquisitions and Contracts Unit guidelines. Keeps abreast with all current governmental regulations regarding transportation reports, state surplus, automotive industry technology developments, etc.; advises upper management on plans of improvement and corrective measures; and maintains a safe work environment within the operations of Motor Pool.

Successful Candidates must have extensive knowledge and experience in the principles and methods in managing and operating a pool of vehicles and a State garage; capability to perform vehicle maintenance, adjustments, and repairs; knowledge of Motor Vehicle codes pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on public roadways; competency in budgeting, managing, and implementing service contracts; understanding in procuring and maintaining adequate inventory of auto parts and mechanical equipment; strong supervisory skills; excellent communication abilities; good organizational skills; and possess basic computer knowledge.
