General Information:
Job title: Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Technologist/Medical Technologist - Equivalent
Schedules Available: Full-time, 80 hours per pay period; Monday - Thursday, Night Shift
Weekend rotation: No Weekends
Holiday rotation: No Holidays
Position Summary:
The Medical Lab Technologist, under the supervision of the Assistant Laboratory Director and Laboratory Director, performs laboratory tests and procedures as requested by the medical staff.
Position Responsibilities:
- Performs additional duties in one of the 6 sections: Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Blood Gas/Point of Care, Chemistry or Blood Bank.
- Maintains supply inventory for section.
- Performs weekly and monthly maintenance on section analyzers.
- Assist company in implementing new analyzers by running validations, attending advance training at the company's training center, training techs on new tests/analyzers.
- Updates/reviews section policies and procedures on a yearly basis.
- Performs 6-month correlations in section.
- Performs calibration and linearity of tests in section when necessary.
- Perform necessary data review and reports.
- Complete section for staff's annual competency.
- Review proficiency test results for your section. Perform investigation report for failed results and provide education to staff to ensure accurate results for future proficiency samples.
- Perform laboratory tests in hematology (including manual differentials and morphological examination), coagulation, chemistry, blood gas, serology, blood bank (including antibody identification), and microbiology.
- Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory coworkers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Section Head or Clinical Pathologist.
- Calls critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria
- Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates own work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications
- Runs quality-control tests according to procedure to ensure lab is running within established ranges and maintains appropriate data recording.
- Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Section Lead as required. Documents actions taken.
- Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the Section Lead, or where appropriate, to the Laboratory Director.
- Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules.
- Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken.
- Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Section Lead as required.
- Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the Section Lead.
- Provides in-service training to other laboratory personnel and students within a designated area.
- Provides instruction in laboratory bench procedures, instrument/clinical troubleshooting techniques, and clinical application of test results.
- Assures assimilation of procedures and evaluates troubleshooting techniques. Documents same by initialing department checklist.
- Assist the Section Lead in establishing educational programs that will meet the needs of employees or students.
- Notify section lead or Lab Director when low on supplies.
- Answer phone calls from patients and outside providers looking for test information.
- Receive supplies; check them in, (date all packages, compare with packing slip) put supplies away in appropriate storage space.
- Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory area
- Attend and participate in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs.
- Observe laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Keep work area neat and clean and restock daily supplies.
- Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the Phlebotomy area. Attend bone marrow and body fluid collections to assist physicians in specimen preparation.
- Performs other duties as requested.
Position Requirements:
- Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Technologist-Equivalent
- Two-year Medical Laboratory Technician degree required.
- Medical Technologist
- Four-year degree from an accredited program or two-year degree from an accredited program with MT AAB Certification recognized required.
- ASCP certification or equivalent required or obtained within 1 year of hire.
- 1+ years of related work experience preferred.
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Intermediate proficiency with computers is required.
- Knowledgeable regarding phlebotomy and recognizing expected/abnormal test results.
- Knowledge of quality control.
- Maintain equilibrium in stressful situations.
- Strong quantitative and analytical competency.
- Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to have continuous oral and written communication with co-workers, patients, and supervisors is essential.
