Position Overview:

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all safety programs and initiatives at Canton Drop Forge. The role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations while fostering a culture of safety within a unionized manufacturing environment of English and Spanish speaking workers. The Safety Manager will work closely with employees, union representatives, and management to promote safety best practices, prevent workplace accidents, and mitigate risks in the manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program Development: Design, implement, and maintain safety policies and procedures specific to a forge shop environment, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Training & Education: Develop and deliver safety training programs for all employees, including topics such as hazard recognition, PPE usage, lockout/tagout procedures, and emergency response.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to identify potential risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into workplace accidents, injuries, or near-misses, ensuring accurate reporting, root cause analysis, and the development of corrective/preventative actions.
  • Collaboration with Union: Work closely with union representatives to ensure safety protocols are understood, enforced, and that employee concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations, including maintaining up-to-date documentation, permits, and reports.
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Promote a proactive safety culture by engaging employees at all levels in safety discussions and initiatives.
  • Equipment & Facility Safety: Oversee the safe operation and maintenance of all machinery and equipment, ensuring proper safeguards are in place and functional.
  • Ergonomics & Employee Well-being: Address ergonomic issues and collaborate with HR on employee health and well-being initiatives.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and manage the company's emergency response plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and coordination with local emergency services.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in safety management within a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant safety regulations.
  • Experience with hazard analysis, risk assessments, and safety audits.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with both management and unionized employees.
  • Certification in safety management (e.g., CSP, CIH) is preferred.
  • Written and spoken fluency in Latin American Spanish and English preferred.

  • Proficiency in safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, high-risk environment.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily works in a forge shop environment with exposure to high temperatures, noise, and heavy machinery.
  • Occasional travel for safety training and conferences may be required.
