As a Senior Principal Engineer on the Member Marketplace team, you’ll lead the charge in architecting and scaling the core user-facing experiences across desktop, mobile web, and native apps. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role where you’ll shape the technical direction of the platform that millions of members interact with daily. You’ll set the tone for engineering excellence, champion performance and accessibility, and lead cross-functional efforts to modernize and future-proof our frontend platforms. In this role you will own the technical vision and architectural strategy for Shipt’s Member Marketplace experience across web and mobile and be responsible for designing and evolving component libraries, design systems, and cross-platform UI foundations to support multiple teams and product surfaces. You will lead modern React and React Native application architecture, using Next.js for SSR/SSG and Apollo GraphQL for data orchestration and scale best practices for state management, routing, async data handling, lazy loading, and cross-device responsiveness. Additionally, you will collaborate across domains to solve complex problems that span backend, data, and mobile platforms, influence the frontend platform strategy through contributions to performance monitoring, observability, and alerting practices, and contribute to clean GraphQL schema design, GraphOS federation strategies, and scalable data-fetching paradigms. What You’ll Need to Be Successful Core Technical Expertise 10+ years of experience in frontend engineering with a strong foundation in JavaScript/TypeScript Deep knowledge of React, React Native, and Next.js for building modern, scalable SPAs and mobile-first applications Strong understanding of Apollo GraphQL and best practices around client-side schema management, caching, and federated GraphQL Experience with component libraries, design systems, and tools like Storybook, Figma, and Chromatic Mastery of CSS strategies: CSS-in-JS, Tailwind, SCSS, CSS Modules, or equivalent Fluency in cross-platform architecture and experience with mobile-specific constraints Strong grasp of state management patterns (Redux or context API) Expertise in building and scaling frontend CI/CD pipelines Familiarity with Web Vitals, Lighthouse, Core Web performance metrics, and observability tools (Datadog, New Relic, Sentry) Work Arrangement Shipt considers candidates located near a Shipt office or workspace in Birmingham, San Francisco, or Minneapolis to be hybrid, which means that they have the flexibility to work from home (with leader approval) or at a Shipt office in order to facilitate the ability to innovate, collaborate, and spark team connections. In-office expectations will vary by role and leader. Certain roles may require in-office presence on a full-time basis. Other compensation includes eligibility for an annual bonus and the potential for restricted stock units based on role. Pay range: Metro Areas of Boston, District of Columbia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York City: $164,000-$328,000 All other locations: $136,000-$273,000 Please note that the salary range above is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
