POSITION: Student Success Coach

DEPARTMENT: Office of Student Success & Retention Services

REPORTS TO: Director, Center for Academic Excellence

STATUS: Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY: The Success Coach helps students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. These include academic and career goal setting, learning strategies, time management, self-regulation, and self-efficacy. Provides academic advising to undergraduate students and builds relationships that support their academic and career plans. This position is responsible for working one-on-one with students to help them develop effective learning strategies and become self-guided learners. The Student Success Coach will help students improve academically by identifying strengths and weaknesses and creating a structured and collaborative approach to support academic progress.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with counselors and administrators to promote the program
  • Uses the Developmental Intrusive Academic Advising model to build relationships with new and current students to support student success and retention
  • Coordinates and integrates initiatives that promote and enhance student services and activities
  • Creates academic plans for students and communicates with them on a regular basis
  • Assists students with academic and career advising, as well as assistance with students continuing on academic warning, probation, or dismissal
  • Aids students in the understanding of graduation requirements, academic policies, and procedures, and assist students with unofficial degree audits.
  • Refers students to other services on campus and off-campus such as academic advising, counseling and career services, tutoring, and other resources to support the students' personal needs
  • Serves as a student advocate and mentor, acting as a liaison among students, faculty, college departments, and community resources
  • Assists with New Student Orientation, Wildcat Immersion Scholars Program, and other summer enrichment programs as needed
  • Provides students with skills-building strategies that will promote self-guided learning
  • Works with students to develop and strengthen time management and organizational skills
  • Motivates students to take ownership of their own academic success
  • Documents and monitors student academic progress.
  • Assists students with developing critical thinking skills that promote good decision-making
  • Plans and facilitates Student Success Workshops
  • Provides specialized academic coaching sessions
  • Assists students with focusing on individual goals and identifying steps to reaching goals
  • Assists students with identifying obstacles that may interfere with their academic success
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Will require some evening and weekend hours

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the organization, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge and proficiency in computers, especially Microsoft office applications
  • Strong knowledge of student support programs and ability to make referrals
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and attention to detail
  • Experience in teaching college-level students

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree with at least 3 years of experience in academic advising or a closely related field.
  • Mastery of proactive academic advising techniques
  • General understanding of students' affective domain and knowledge of resources to assist students' needs.
