Unit Description – Emergency Department (ED)
Type of Care:
- The Emergency Department at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Medical Center provides 24/7 emergency and trauma care to patients of all ages.
- The unit handles a wide range of acute medical, surgical, cardiac, neurological, and pediatric emergencies.
- It is a Stroke- and STEMI-certified facility , ensuring rapid response and intervention for time-sensitive conditions.
Patient Population:
- Neonates through geriatrics , including trauma, cardiac, stroke, psychiatric, and medical-surgical emergencies.
Shift & Schedule:
- 12-hour shifts , rotating days/nights/weekends as scheduled.
- Floating required to similar acuity departments based on patient census and need.
- Call may be required depending on unit staffing and facility protocol.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform rapid triage, assessment, and stabilization of patients presenting with emergent and life-threatening conditions.
- Implement emergency interventions including IV therapy, cardiac monitoring, and medication administration .
- Interpret and manage dysrhythmias, hemodynamic instability, and multi-system failure .
- Assist with and perform procedures such as intubation support, chest tube management, arterial line care, and wound management .
- Care for ventilated patients , interpret ABGs, and manage CPAP/BiPAP therapy.
- Administer emergency medications, sedation, paralytics, and vasopressors as per protocols.
- Provide emergency response for cardiac arrests, strokes, trauma, and psychiatric crises .
- Support pediatric emergencies including asthma, febrile seizures, burns, infections, and trauma .
- Accurately document patient care in the Epic EMR system and ensure clear SBAR communication during handoffs.
- Collaborate with EMS, physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and radiology for coordinated emergency response and patient transfer.
Skills & Procedures:
- Cardiac Monitoring: 12-lead EKG interpretation, dysrhythmia management, and rapid cardiac interventions.
- IV/Phlebotomy: Central and arterial line management, IV starts, blood product administration.
- Medications: Emergency meds, IV sedation, paralytics, and vasoactive infusions.
- Neurological: Stroke management, trauma assessment, spinal injury care, hypothermia protocol.
- Respiratory: Intubation assistance, ventilator care, CPAP/BiPAP, ABG interpretation.
- Trauma: Gunshot wounds, burns, orthopedic trauma, and amputations.
- Psychiatric: Acute psychosis, overdose, suicidal ideation, violent patient management.
- Pediatric: Acute illness, infection management, respiratory distress, near drowning, and trauma.
- Professional Skills: Triage, infection control, PPE compliance, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Certifications Required:
- BLS
- ACLS
- PALS
- TNCC
- NIHSS
- (Preferred: CPI/MAB, NRP, SANE)
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of recent Emergency Department experience required.
- Must be proficient in trauma, cardiac, and critical care emergency interventions.
- First-time travelers accepted.
Systems & Equipment:
- Medication System: Pyxis
- Charting: Epic
- Communication: SBAR
- Monitoring: Bedside and portable cardiac monitoring systems
Provider & Department Support:
- 24/7 in-house physician, NP/PA, respiratory therapy, radiology, and pharmacy support
- Rapid Response and Code Teams available
- Dedicated security and social services for behavioral emergencies
