Job Description

Seeking a California licensed Associate Litigation Attorney (remote acceptable) with 2.5 to 5 years of experience for a dynamic job opportunity. We seek a candidate to be part of a trial team covering all aspects of litigation. We are a small boutique defense litigation firm where everyone participates in all aspects of each case from researching and writing motions to taking depositions of plaintiffs, lay and expert witnesses, to preparing and participating in trial should a case go to trial. We investigate each case and come up with creative factual and legal defenses unique to our area of practice. We are looking for attorneys who are self-starters to work with a lot of independence yet still be part of our defense team. Experience in asbestos or benzene/toxic tort litigation is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Attorneys show their expertise through confident, thoughtful and proactive work product. Independent thinking coupled with exceptional writing skills is crucial for success. Attorneys' work will include:

  • Research and analyze the law on complex issues; write briefs for submission to a supervising attorney or for direct filing
  • Synthesize legal research and analysis into coherent written memoranda or brief for submission to a client or court
  • Appear in court on behalf of the firm's clients, argue motions and issues
  • Prepare for and attend depositions of plaintiffs, lay witnesses and expert witnesses
  • Investigate factual claims and recommend further investigation as needed
  • Investigate medical allegations and prepare medical defenses
  • Participate in firm meetings on case strategy
  • Negotiate with opposing counsel on issues in contention as well as ultimately potential resolution of cases

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate.
  • Self-starter.
  • Ability to work independently yet communicate back to the team.
  • Be familiar with Federal and State Court Rules.
  • Be able to perform research and analysis of law, be able to write briefs and memoranda, be able to think strategically.

Requirements

  • Focus on quality work product; creative and strategic lawyering
  • Superior writing skills reflecting thoughtful analysis
  • Maintain strong time management and organizational skills and be detail-oriented and self-motivated.

Knowledge and Education

  • Possess a Juris Doctorate (JD) and be a member of the California state bar
  • Knowledge of state and federal civil procedure and state, federal and local rules
  • Experience in asbestos and benzene/toxic tort litigation

Physical demands and the work environment

  • Domestic travel to attend court appearances and depositions if remote appearance is not an option.

Salary:

  • The salary for this California-based role is anticipated to be in the range of $90,000 to $150,000 and represents the firm's good faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation is negotiable, and will depend upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate's years of experience, qualifications, and skill set.

Schedule:

  • Generally, Monday to Friday; work over weekends may be required occasionally to meet client deadlines and demands. Position can sit in Los Angeles or San Francisco office; fully remote, in person as needed.
