Job Description

Project Manager – Commercial & Civil Construction (Big Island Projects)

Hawaii Island (Big Island), HI • $130,000+ (DOE)

About the Company

My client is one of Hawai‘i’s most established and diversified general contractors, with a long history of delivering major building, commercial, civil, industrial, and waterfront projects across the islands. Their work spans hospitality, retail, residential, healthcare, educational facilities, and large-scale infrastructure — including many of Hawai‘i’s most recognizable structures.

Their Big Island division continues to grow, supported by long-term relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, and subcontractors. They are known for quality, safety, strong field leadership, and consistent project delivery.

About the Role

They are seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead all financial, administrative, and field coordination aspects of construction projects on the Big Island. This role oversees a team of Superintendents, Project Engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest level of quality.

The ideal candidate has strong technical construction expertise, excellent communication skills, and the leadership presence to guide diverse teams through complex builds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead full lifecycle project management — from preconstruction through closeout.

  • Review plans, specifications, estimates, schedules, and production rates to validate constructability and cost adequacy.

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers.

  • Represent the company in pre-job conferences, OAC meetings, and internal coordination meetings.

  • Direct and support Superintendents and Project Engineers on scheduling, productivity goals, document control, safety, and field coordination.

  • Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

  • Review, edit, and approve all project-related written communications and documentation.

  • Oversee subcontract negotiations, change management, cost controls, and progress billing.

  • Monitor and manage budgets, forecasts, schedules, procurement, and risk mitigation strategies.

  • Identify opportunities for improved methods, value engineering, sequencing, and cost efficiency.

  • Oversee preparation of closeout documentation, punch lists, and turnover deliverables.

Role Expectations
  • Lead with clarity, consistency, and professionalism across all project stakeholders.

  • Anticipate and resolve constructability, sequencing, or schedule conflicts before they impact operations.

  • Maintain a strong presence in both field and office settings.

  • Uphold high standards of safety, quality, communication, and team collaboration.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field OR 8+ years of practical construction experience.

  • 4+ years of direct Project Management experience on commercial, civil, or industrial projects.

  • Strong technical knowledge across multiple trades.

  • Working knowledge of construction equipment, contract law, scheduling strategies, and general business principles.

  • Experience in estimating, negotiations, and subcontractor management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software.

  • Prior Hawai‘i construction experience strongly preferred; Big Island experience is a plus.

Why Join My Client?
  • Competitive Salary: Starting at $130,000 (DOE)

  • Benefits Package:

    • Medical, Dental, Vision

    • PTO & Paid Holidays

    • 401(k) with employer match

    • Profit sharing

    • Life & AD&D insurance

    • Long-term disability

    • Flexible Spending Accounts

    • Wellness programs

    • Employee Assistance Program
